Terminology

One of the first things we need to consider is the terminology that we will use to describe what happened to Japanese Americans in the Pacific War.  Choices need to be made.  Is what happened internment, or incarceration?  Were the camps internment camps or concentration camps?  The Densho Encyclopedia has a very helpful article:

The choice of terminology can be political.  The history of concentration camps is long, but the camps of the Holocaust have left an association of the term "concentration camps" with the term "death camps."  It is important to note the difference.  What happened to Japanese Americans fully fits the definition of "concentration camps."
